The Basic Principles Of A Beautiful Landscape Design

Whether you are looking for landscape design for your garden by borrowing ideas from others or want to create your own landscaping design, you need to have a basic understanding of the principles of landscape design. One does not have to apply every principle into the design, but knowing these can help generate ideas and helps in increasing your creativity.

Here are some of the basic principles that one needs to follow when creating a beautiful design –

    • The major goal of the design should be unity. It is achieved by creating a consistency of character using different elements in the design. The character includes the size, height, texture and color schemes. You may choose to create theme gardens as it makes the designing much easier.
    • Another major principle is the simplicity. If you are a beginner, you need to keep the design simple and then add as you move forward. One needs to keep the decor minimum and within a specific theme.
    • There should be a balance in the design and a sense of equality in the design. The different elements like the rocks, plants and decor should match with each other.
     • One can also achieve contrast and harmony using plants. The plant height, color and texture can be varied from one area to another and still be within a particular theme.
    • Color adds interest and life to the landscape design. Bright colors such as red, yellow and orange can make an object appear closer to you, while colors like green, blue and pastels seems to move away from you. You can easily use color to direct the attention of the visitor to a specific area of the garden.
    • One needs to use transition to illustrate an illusion using the plant height or color.
    • Another important principle is the proportion which means the size of the elements in relation to each other. While this is quite obvious, it needs a little planning to get it right.
While one need not apply all the principles, it is much easier to design the landscape once they know all the elements that come into making a stunning design.
